The Wisconsin DNR demands a halt on Line 5. The Department of Natural Resources wants the Canadian company Enbridge to focus on cleanup of a site in Iron County where some 2,000 barrels of natural gas liquids were released on August 25th. According to the DNR Enbridge began constructing a temporary bypass near the site without required state approvals.
The most recent letter from DNR Secretary Karen Hyun said Enbridge has shown a pattern of noncompliance and has increased environmental concerns since a warning issued two days after the Iron County spill.
Enbridge stated that the leak occurred when a subcontractor’s unoccupied truck struck the pipe, releasing the gasses. The DNR letter said it will continue to monitor the site, document additional violations and may pursue enforcement action.
