Don’t be fooled by scammers trying to get you to pay phony utility fees.
Wisconsin Consumer protection administrator Michelle Reinen says your utility is not coming out to turn off the power or heat right now, especially not during the winter.
“In Wisconsin, that’s not possible if you have unpaid bills because from November 1 to April 15th of every year, there is a winter heating moratorium for unpaid bills.”
Reinen says your heat cannot be disconnected for non-payment.
“And even when we end that moratorium, there’s an entire process. It doesn’t happen during a phone call where you are threatened to make a payment and that truck isn’t on the way if you hang up on that caller.”
Reinen reminds everyone that no government agency is going to call you and demand an immediate payment over the phone. If you get one of these calls, simply hang up.
