Educating students about how to stop bullies appears to be paying off in schools.
Jon Hisgen of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is beaming about a report that finds a more than 30-percent reduction in the number of school kids nationwide who report being bullied or beaten up by their peers.
Hisgen has been involved in a statewide educational effort to halt the age-old problem. He says it’s a behavior that affects learning and impacts many children. The effort has focused on getting teachers involved to stop bullying early on.
The reduction in bullying took place over a five year period.
