After insisting for weeks that he would not attend the Republican National Convention, Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson is now set to speak in Cleveland on Tuesday night. Wisconsin mayors criticized the decision in a conference call set up the state Democratic party.
Bayfield Mayor Gordon Ringberg noted that Johnson has said he’d pull his support from any candidate that “crosses the line.”
“Apparently that line – which I think was crossed a long time ago – is just not there for the Senator,” Ringberg said.
Johnson is locked in a challenging reelection bid with Democrat Russ Feingold.
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said Johnson’s tacit support of Donald Trump puts him at odds with “Wisconsin values”
“To have someone who has now decided that he’s going to throw his lot with one of the most bizarre candidates for president we have seen in this country is beyond belief,” Barrett said.
In addition to Johnson, House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin is also scheduled to speak at the RNC tonight.
