Madison police say 30-40 young people, ranging from middle school age to young adults, were involved in a brawl near a school on the city’s west side Thursday afternoon. According to the police incident report, some of those involved in fight in an open area near Falk Elementary “were armed with bricks, snow shovels and various other items including some believed to be armed with handguns.”
An 18-year-old victim was treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound to the shoulder. An investigation is ongoing. According to MPD, several residents of the nearby neighborhood expressed appreciation for the increased law enforcement presence as the incident was being investigated.
Residents in the Meadowood Neighborhood, which is immediately adjacent to the scene of Thursday’s fight, have expressed support for the police department with yard signs that read “We Support Madison Police.”
