A call on Kohl to defend net neutrality

August 31, 2006 By WRN Contributor

Business people delivered petitions to Senator Herb Kohl's Madison office on Thursday, asking for his vote to protect net neutrality.

Sue Brown, owner of Satara, a Madison retailer, said net neutrality assures competition, consumer choice and fair pricing. Bruce Speight, a field director for Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group, said net neutrality allows for free and equal access to the Internet. Opponents fear a bill already passed by the House of Representatives will let big telephone and cable providers restrict access, to those companies and groups willing to pay for it. Speight said that could mean a “fast lane,” and a “slow lane” for Internet access.

Samuel Cooke owner of Noble Earth Technologies, a Madison area environmental firm, said a call to Kohl's office yielded a staff response that the Senator has no official opinion on a House bill which the Senate is scheduled to take up later this month. The group delivering the petitions were members of a the SavetheInternet.com coalition
