Poor performance on Monday night, seals Carroll's fate

October 4, 2006 By WRN Contributor

Ahmad Carroll's dismal performance in Monday nights loss to the Eagles is what sealed his fate. Carroll was the teams top pick in the 2004 draft, but continued to struggle in coverage, particularily with ball's downfield. Coach Mike McCarthy said, “It's been a problem for him. People will continue to challenge him until he stops it.” Carroll's lack of size led to a number of penalties. That led to teams taking shots his way on a routine basis and subsequently, turned up the pressure. Carroll was always a hard worker, but he could also be difficult to coach at times. The Packers decided Tuesday that it was time to cut Carroll loose. After Monday nights loss, Carroll took the blame for the loss and apologized to his teammates in the secondary. Carroll's release leaves the Packers with just six players on the roster from Mike Sherman's four drafts as head coach and general manager. Linebacker Nick Barnett is the only first round pick the remains. The job at nickelback, barring a roster move is expected to go to Jarrett Bush, whom the Packers claimed off waivers from Carolina after training camp.
