Doyle says sick leave benefit should stay

November 30, 2006 By WRN Contributor

State Legislators have drawn criticism recently for the potential abuse of a perk that allows them to convert unused sick time into medical retirement benefits. Governor Jim Doyle says it's clear that some changes are needed to the system, such as developing a better system for lawmakers to report used sick time.

However, Doyle says lawmakers should still be able to keep the benefit. He says it doesn't make sense to just do away with a benefit that many state employees also enjoy.

Lawmakers have defended the perk, arguing that legislative schedules can often be worked around when they're sick. Doyle says it may be a difficult subject for the Legislature to deal with.
