Anti-mining activist Churchill dies

February 16, 2007 By WRN Contributor

The man known as the father of Wisconsin's anti-mining movement, 90 year old Roscoe Churchill, has died. Thousands are expected at a visitation funeral and memorial service over the next two days. Churchill and his late wife Evelyn spent years traveling across the united states and Canada visiting mines and learning every aspect of the mining process. Their efforts became the subject of a book, The Buzzards Have Landed . In 1998 Churchill was instrumental in creating Wisconsin's Mining Moratorium Law , mandating strict environmental standards for mining companies to follow before they could get permits. Funeral services have been set for Friday at 11. It's said that Roscoe's experience, eloquence and fearlessness won the admiration and respect of an entire generation of environmental activists.
