Betting on future casinos in the state

April 3, 2007 By WRN Contributor

A bill that would give the legislature more say in casino projects gets a hearing today.

Even the tribes are debating which one has a right to off reservation casinos. The Ho-chunk Nation is running ads disputing the Chippewa's right to a Beloit casino. Other ads are airing that question the Menominee's bid for a Kenosha casino in partnership with the Mohicans of Connecticut. And the legislature is debating who should have the final say over them all.

State representative Robin Vos (R-Racine) says a new state survey backs republican claims that the legislature, not the governor, should have final say over where casinos are built. He says at least 76% said the legislature should have at least some input into the decision.

Vos says it's a matter of democracy. When that much money and thousands of jobs are involved more than one person should be deciding what's best for Wisconsin taxpayers.

There's a legislative hearing on Vos's bill scheduled for later Tuesday.
