Boys State Golf opens today

June 4, 2007 By WRN Contributor

The WIAA Boys State Golf Tournament opens today at University Ridge Golf Course near Madison.

Homestead is back to defend its division title, despite losing four of its top five golfers from a year ago.  The Highlanders aren't the favorites, though.  Kettle Moraine, Eau Claire Memorial, Arrowhead, Stevens Point and Madison La Collette appear to be the teams that have the inside track to the team title.

In division 2, no school has ever won three straight state titles since a second division was added in 1988.  Catholic Memorial will take aim at that, but is a slight underdog to Green Bay Notre Dame, the runner-up last year.

In division 3, Osseo-Fairchild has been the state's dominant Division 3 program for years now, winning eight state titles since 1994.  The Chieftains will be in the mix again, with Marshfield Columbus, Eleva-Strum and Stevens Point Pacelli likely to provide the greatest challenges.
