State senate aide "moonlights" as soap consultant

June 27, 2007 By WRN Contributor

The fictional plot of the daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless features a candidate for the Wisconsin State senate from Genoa City.

At first, Dan Johnson thought it was a joke when he got an email out of the blue from someone claiming to be the story coordinator for Y&R.

Johnson, chief of staff for the real-life senator Neal Kedzie who represents the real-life Genoa City soon found it was no joke. The show wanted to know what a state senator would do on a daily basis besides cast votes, be on the senate floor and meet on committees.

They wanted to know how the office is set up. How it's staffed. How they all interact.

Johnson says he hasn't seen any of his suggestions yet since part of a legislative aide's job is not watching soap operas but he says thank goodness for TiVo.

As the plot turns Johnson is anxious to follow the Wisconsin political story line and see how the show incorporates his suggestions.
