Assembly Republicans line up against tax hikes

July 9, 2007 By WRN Contributor

Majority Republicans in the Assembly this week are set to pass a no-tax-increase budget. They want to show the difference between their package, and the $18 billion dollars in new taxes proposed by Democrats who control the state Senate. "The message I hear from home is 'live within your budget'" says Assembly Budget Committee chairman, Representative Kitty Rhoades (R-Hudson). "The biggest thing is you don't expand or create new programs, when you don't have the revenue to do it." Rhoades says her western Wisconsin constituents are "terrified" by the all the new taxes included in the Senate Democrats' budget. Assembly Republicans are rejecting those taxes on businesses, smokers, hospitals and big oil, as they take up the budget on Tuesday.
