Congressman thinks tax rebates will help

January 22, 2008 By WRN Contributor

A western Wisconsin lawmaker thinks tax rebate checks might be just what our struggling economy needs.

U.S. Representative Ron Kind (D-La Crosse) says the anxiety over the economy is justified. He says slowdowns in economic activity, job layoffs, and growing financial pressures have many people worried.

Last week, Republican President George W. Bush proposed a $150 billion plan that is focused on personal tax rebates and investment incentives for businesses that equal about 1 percent of gross domestic product. Kind thinks the rebates, which would be between $600 and $1,600, could be a good idea. He says it speaks to the demand side of the economy, and could get people out spending money.
