A St. Valentine's Day Massacre avoided

February 14, 2008 By WRN Contributor

Police in Portage may have helped keep horrendous history from repeating itself.

On this day in 1929, the St. Valentine's Day Massacre occurred in Chicago, involving gangster Al Capone and Bugs Moran. Today, a 16-year-old from Portage is in protective custody after possibly making similar plans.

Columbia County Lieutenant Wayne Smith says the student had studied up on the history of the day, and had been talking with co-workers about plans to shoot people at school. Police found firearms at the boy's home, which have been removed from his access when he's released.

The teen is also accused of making threatening gestures with a knife at work last night, after allegedly talking about his plans with co-workers.

Portage police maintained a presence at the school today.
