New debate over a statewide smoking ban

February 25, 2008 By WRN Contributor

A proposed statewide smoking ban is back in the spotlight at the Capitol this week.

A bill to ban smoking in all workplaces, including bars and restaurants, has been stalled in the state Senate. So, supporters have introduced a version in the Assembly.

The Assembly Public Health Committee, chaired by state Representative Doc Hines (R-Oxford), will hold a hearing on the measure Wednesday. Hines thinks there's a good chance to move it forward in the Assembly, despite opposition. He's expecting a great deal of debate in committee over the bill.

The Tavern League strongly opposes the legislation and has lobbied for a delay to give bars more time to comply. Hines does not want that to happen.
