GM shutdown not a surprise for some

October 13, 2008 By WRN Contributor

The news that the Janesville General Motors plant will close in December is not a surprise for one state lawmaker.

The plant will halt production of SUVs on December 23rd, despite earlier plans to keep it open until 2010. Former UAW Local 95 president and State Representative Mike Sheridan says he expected this to happen, and it shouldn't be a shock to anyone.

Still, Sheridan is holding out hope that a new product could come to Janesville. He says GM recognizes the hard work of its employees at the plant, and talks continue to push through a package designed by union, local, and state leaders that would bring another product line to the facility.

However, Sheridan says many line workers are already training for other types of jobs.
