Judge won't release audio of slain student's 911 call

December 22, 2008 By WRN Contributor

A Dane County judge has rejected news media requests to release audio of a 911 call from a slain University of Wisconsin-Madison student, saying it still has value to the investigation into Brittany Zimmerman's murder.

Media outlets sued the county under the state open records law for a copy of the call , which was made from Zimmermann's cell phone shortly before she was stabbed to death in April.

The call has been a source of controversy as it was mishandled by a 911 operator, who said she did not hear a scream or the sounds of a struggle, which police say are audible on the tape.

Dane County Judge Richard Niess says the recording contains information that is significant to the search for the killer of the 21 year-old Marshfield native, and releasing it could jeopardize the police investigation.
