Lobbying against a hospital tax

February 4, 2009 By WRN Contributor

It may be a "done deal," but opponents of a proposed hospital assessment are still raising concerns about the measure.

Governor Doyle is urging lawmakers to approve the tax on hospital services, which he says will allow Wisconsin to claim more federal Medicaid funding. However, Wisconsin Federation of Independent Business director Bill Smith says small businesses are afraid the measure will also drive up their health care costs.

Smith is doubtful they can stop the measure from going through though, now that Democrats control both houses of the state Legislature.

The tax is expected to be included in the budget bill the governor submits to legislators next week.
