Tough times for local government

February 23, 2009 By WRN Contributor

Leaders of Wisconsin cities are planning for tougher times, according to Rich Eggleston, of the Alliance of Cities.

Governor Doyle's proposed budget cuts state shared revenues to local governments by one-percent. Eggleston says that amounts to about an $8.5 million cut statewide, and it will be hard for some cities to make that up.

However, Eggleston admits it could have been a lot worse.

He says cities are going to have to tighten their belts even more.

The proposed budget also reinstates levy limits, but does give local governments more leeway in the amount of property taxes they can raise.
