Funeral today for Portage soldier

March 4, 2009 By WRN Contributor

It's been a week of mourning since Portage learned that a native son was killed in Afghanistan. Daniel Thompson graduated from Portage High School in 2003. Family friend Roger Carlin says Thompson was inspired to enlist after 9/11. "He was just a great kid . . . a true hero," says Carlin.

Portage residents turned out to salute Thompson, as his body arrived back home Tuesday. Carlin, who still has a hard time accepting the death, says Thompson was outgoing, and a dedicated soldier who planned on becoming a police officer. The funeral for the 24 year-old is today. Thompson was killed last week when his humvee hit a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.
