Wisconsin's elk herd appears to be thriving these days.
Keith Warnke, big game manager for the DNR, says there are about 150 elk in northern Wisconsin now. He says the number is increasing, despite some growing pains with reproduction problems.
Warnke says the herd is expected to continue growing and expanding its presence beyond northwestern Wisconsin.
When the elk population reaches 200, Warnke says there are plans for a very limited hunt.
