EAB turns up in Kenosha

August 12, 2009 By Andrew Beckett

Another sighting of the emerald ash borer in Wisconsin.

This time, the tree killing insect has been found in Kenosha. DATCP pest specialist Mick Skwarok says workers found the beetle in one of many traps the agency has set up statewide. The discovery will result in a quarantine for the county and possibly for surrounding areas as well.

EAB has now turned up in six Wisconsin counties. Aside from Kenosha, it has also been confirmed in Brown, Crawford, Ozaukee, Vernon and Washington Counties. Skwarok expects the risk to grow in several other southern areas of the state, due to large infestations that have been found just over the Illinois border.

DATCP this week began collecting several thousand traps that were set up across the state to look for EAB. Skwarok says the number of confirmed sightings of the insect could easily go up in the coming weeks as more of those are brought in.
