The challenge of returning to civilian life

January 14, 2010 By WRN Contributor

All this month, Wisconsin National Guard members will be returning home from Iraq, and it can present a challenge to young families where the father or mother has been gone to war for 10 months.

Laura Pettersen is with the UW Extension’s “Operation Military Kids,” which helps families make that transition. She says they need a great deal of support during that time of reunification, which they hope to provide while helping them become a full family again.

Roughly 3,200 Wisconsin National Guard members have been in Iraq since last spring and are now returning home. It was the largest deployment of troops from the Badger State since World War II.
