Having home security in mind for holiday

May 28, 2010 By Brian Moon

If you and your family are leaving town for Memorial Day, there are some things to keep in mind to keep your home safe. A police officer says first and foremost use your locks. Jason Weber with the Wisconsin Crime Prevention Practitioners Association (WCPPA) says so many burglaries to homes and cars occur when are they are simply unlocked.

The virtual world is also a place where criminals case out homes. Weber says beware of posting too much information about travel plans on social networking sites.

“What people fail to realize is that no matter what type of privacy settings that they set. There is always some sort of way people can access that and they can find the times that you are going to be gone.”

The old standbys of leaving lights on to appear someone is home or having a neighbor keep an eye on the house are still good ways of preventing burglaries.
