Protecting the state Transportation Fund

June 28, 2010 By WRN Contributor

There’s a move today to amend Wisconsin’s Constitution to protect the state’s Transportation Fund, which gets its revenue from the gas tax and vehicle registration fees. A coalition of private businesses, labor groups, and local government officials want to constitutionally prohibit raids on the fund to balance the state budget.

Craig Thompson heads the coalition, which is expected to rally at the state Capitol later today. He says highway projects have been suffering as a result of more than $1.3 billion being taken from the Fund over the past eight years.

The coalition hopes to get counties to schedule advisory referendums on the Constitutional Amendment in November.
