United’s Watson commits to Ohio State

October 6, 2010 By Bill Scott

Appleton United standout defenseman Cliff Watson verbally committed to play Division 1 college hockey for Mark Osiecki at Ohio State.

Wisconsin coach Mike Eaves showed interest in Watson, but wanted to see him play more before offering a scholarship.  Ohio State and Miami of Ohio both offered scholarships to Watson, who decided to play for the Buckeyes because of Osiecki’s record with defensemen.

Watson will play with Appleton United this season and possibly be paired on the blue line with his younger brother Cooper.  He’s then expected to play junior hockey with Sioux City, the USHL team that holds his rights, before joining Ohio State.

McKay to Miami of Ohio

Green Bay Gamblers goaltender Ryan McKay has committed to the University of Miami of Ohio of the CCHA.  McKay is the second player on the Gamblers roster to commit to the Red Hawks, joining forward Austin Czarnik.

McKay enters his second year with the Gamblers after compiling a 14-8-2 record with a 2.20 goals against average in his rookie year.

McKay also becomes the 12th Gambler on the 2010-11 squad to commit to a NCAA Division I institution..
