Russell-mania begins tonight in Madison (AUDIO)

September 1, 2011 By Bill Scott

QB Russell Wilson makes his Wisconsin debut tonight when the Badgers open

Russell Wilson

the college football season at home (7pm) against the UNLV Runnin Rebels.

Since transferring to Wisconsin from North Carolina State this summer, Badger Nation has followed with not only Big Ten title discussion, but National Title chat as well.

The play of Wilson will play a large role in the Badgers success, but their running game is still the bread-and-butter of their offense.  Despite the losses  of key starters Gabe Carimi and John Moffitt on the offensive line, there’s not expected to be much drop-off.  The return of Monte Ball and James White at running back will be key for the Badgers running game.

Defensively, Chris Borland saw a shoulder injury end his season in week 3 last year.  If Borland, and Green Bay native Mike Taylor can stay on the field, the Badger defense should be solid.  The defensive line loses defensive end J.J. Watt, but will have more depth this year.

The Badgers will carry a 28-game regular season non-league game win streak into tonight’s game.  The last time Wisconsin lost a non-conference game was back in 2003, to UNLV.  They beat the Rebels 41-21 in Las Vegas last season.
