Advocate: Blame often on abuse victim

October 17, 2011 By Brian Moon

A domestic abuse advocate says society has made strides in recent years in awareness of the issue but we have a way to go. Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence Executive Director Patti Seger says changing things for the better requires the whole community not just the actions of advocates and those in law enforcement and the court system.

Seger notes the burden of blame is often placed on the victim when people ask, “why doesn’t she just leave if she is being abused in that relationship?” Seger says the focus should be on the why the abuser would act that way.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month.
