A reminder on move over law

October 24, 2012 By Brian Moon

The State Patrol reminds drivers to move away from emergency vehicles that are stopped along the roads. Major James Lind says that means drivers should move to the farthest lane away from the stopped vehicle which includes county or construction vehicles with their lights on. Lind says if there is not room to move into another lane then slow down.

Recently a semi-truck driver came within inches of hitting a car that was stopped along I-94 near Eau Claire. The state trooper was interacting with the car’s driver on the passenger side. Had he been standing in driver’s side he would have been struck and possibly killed.

Wisconsin’s “Move Over Law” was passed in 2001.
