Fake fifties plague Stevens Point businesses

October 5, 2012 By WRN Contributor

Police in Stevens Point say several businesses have been victimized with counterfeit 50 dollar bills over the past week. Investigators believe that it’s a small but organized counterfeiting ring. The suspects made small purchases, but paid with fake 50s, hoping to get real money in return.

Hardee’s Restaurant, O’Reilly Auto Parts, and South Point Restaurant were all recipients of the phony fifties. One business, Big Hunchies Roadhouse, had a bartender who noticed that the bill was a fake.

No arrests have been made yet. According to police, most of the fake bills were passed on the city’s south side. They’re asking anyone who handles money or works a cash register to pay close attention to the bills that they handle, and to use a counterfeit pen if they suspect a bill isn’t authentic.
