Negative ads take a toll

November 5, 2012 By Jackie Johnson

Are you tired of the attack campaign ads? You’re not the only one.

The negative tone of Wisconsin’s US Senate race has taken a toll on both candidates, who are viewed more unfavorably than favorably. “Everybody thinks that they live in the most negative campaign ever, probably in the history of the universe. This is a case where the data back that up.”

Political Science Professor Charles Franklin conducted the Marquette University Law School Poll that was released last week.

The survey shows Democrat Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin is viewed favorably by 38 percent, while 45 percent have an unfavorable view of her. Republican former Governor Tommy Thompson is viewed favorably by 38 percent and unfavorably by 51 percent.

Franklin says, “We’ve seen an enormous percentage of negative ads in this state, and in comparison even with other states that have been very negative. It’s taken a toll on both candidates.”

Wisconsin has seen the most negative senate campaign in the country. Franklin says the advertising has done its damage to both candidates quite successfully, that is, if the goal was character assassination.
