Wisconsin dairy production going strong

December 20, 2012 By WRN Contributor

Wisconsin’s dairy cows continue to outperform their counterparts from around the country. According to new government figures, the Badger State’s milk production grew by 4.7 percent in November from the same time a year ago, well above the national increase of one percent. America’s Dairyland produced just under 2.2 billion pounds of milk, while producers from around the country made almost 16 billion pounds.

California remains the nation’s top milk producer, even though its output has been going down for most of the year. November’s production in the Golden State slipped by another 2.3 percent, to about 3.7 billion pounds.

Wisconsin added 6,000 cows to its dairy herd in November, for a total of just over 1.25 million. The state’s production per cow went up by around 70 pounds, to 1,730 per animal.
