Green Bay council grants residency exemption to police chief

February 6, 2013 By WRN Contributor

The Green Bay City Council has approved an exemption for the new Police Chief to live outside the city limits. City ordinance requires department heads to live in the city, but Interim Police Chief Tom Molitor had moved to Oconto County when he retired in 2011.

Molitor said at the beginning of the interview process with the Police and Fire Commission that he would not move back. He purchased what he called his “retirement home” in 2005 and it was worth less now than he paid for it.

Molitor was Assistant Chief until his retirement, and then came back to fill in as chief in mid-2012 when Jim Arts left to head security for the Tennessee Titans.

The city council voted 9-3 Tuesday to grant Molitor a waiver after more than an hour and half of discussion, debate and high praise from fellow officers and the Brown County District Attorney’s office.
