New email account for requests to remove MPD officer

February 6, 2013 By WRN Contributor

Madison’s email system has been overwhelmed by the numerous requests to get Officer Stephen Heimsness off the streets. In fact, a new email has been created to handle the volume.

The city’s IT Department said 250,000 emails were generated, in large part due to the petition site allowing each signer of a petition to share it with all of their email and social networking contacts automatically.

Heimsness has been at the center of controversy since he shot and killed 30-year-old Paul Heenan on South Baldwin Street on November 9th. Investigations cleared him in the shooting, but late last week police announced that Heimsness was the focus of three separate ongoing investigations, something Chief Noble Wray has said he finds troubling.

None of the probes reportedly involve the use of excessive force. Heenan’s family and friends have been very vocal in calling for his removal from patrol. Heimsness remains on administrative leave.
