Bomb scare at Gogebic Taconite office

April 15, 2013 By WRN Contributor

Police say a suspicious backpack left near the Gogebic Taconite offices in Hurley did not contain explosives.

Officers contacted the company’s president Saturday morning to ask if he had left a backpack outside the office. When he said he did not, the area was roped off and the bomb squad was called. The area was reopened late Saturday afternoon when no bomb was found.

Gogebic Taconite wants to build a controversial iron ore mine in the region near the Bad River Chippewa reservation. The tribe and conservation groups are against the plan, saying it could pollute waters there. Supporters say the region needs the jobs.
