State Patrol issues scam warning

September 19, 2013 By WRN Contributor

The Wisconsin State Patrol is issuing a warning about a phone scam where the perpetrator is claiming to be a law enforcement officer and asks for money.

Law Enforcement Dispatch Supervisor Nancy Olig from Wisconsin State Patrol’s Fond du Lac headquarters says she is aware of five attempted scam calls so far stretching from Door County down to Green Lake County. In some of them, the caller identifies himself as “Sergeant Walker from Wisconsin State Patrol.” The fake sergeant usually requests about $900 to pay for damages caused by the victim’s child or grandchild in a crash and asks that the money be wired immediately to fix the damages so the other driver will not press charges.

Supervisor Olig says law enforcement officers, including State Patrol troopers, never ever collect money. She says the agency wants “to make sure that everyone is aware that this is not the way the Wisconsin State Patrol does business, and we would never be making those types of phone calls.”

Olig says anyone who receives a call of this type should not cooperate. They can be reported to the State Patrol.
