Burnett County wildfire under control

October 2, 2013 By Andrew Beckett

Officials with the state Department of Natural Resources says a wildfire in northwestern Wisconsin is contained, after burning about 1,100 acres of state land north of Grantsburg.

The fire was started when a controlled burn of 505 acres of land to restore wildlife habitat in the Crex Meadows Wildlife Area spread beyond its planned containment lines Tuesday, burning an additional 600 acres of state land in Burnett County. DNR crews, working with Minnesota air mutual aide, were able to contain the fire after about six hours and continued working through the night.

The DNR says no structures were damaged and there were no injuries. The fire burned grass, marsh, and limited upland forest areas.
