Work planned to stabilize Leo Frigo Bridge

October 11, 2013 By Andrew Beckett

The state Department of Transportation says crews will begin installing two towers next week under the Leo Frigo Bridge, which will help keep the structure from sagging any further.

The steel truss towers will be placed on both sides of the bridge, about 55 feet away from Pier 22. The pier sunk about two feet on September 25th, causing the deck on the bridge to sag. The DOT says water corrosion to steel pilings under the bridge cause the pier to sink.

The Leo Frigo Bridge is located on I-43 over the Fox River. It will stay closed until all repairs are finished.

Lunda Construction of Black River Falls is the lead contractor for the project, which will cost just over $1.5 million. Construction of the towers starts Monday, and is expected to be finished by early November. Federal funds will cover all repair work for the first six months after the incident, and they will pick up 95 percent after that.

The DOT is also installing lateral supports at the tops of four other piers, to protect workers on the bridge. Those piers have not moved at all, but the supports will keep them completely vertical. Officials are still investigating the condition of the other piers.
