One dead and six injured in deer opener

November 25, 2013 By Bob Hague

An actor-comedian known for his love of Wisconsin deer hunting traditions died during the opening weekend of the nine-day gun season. Jay Legget collapsed after returning to his hunting cabin from his tree stand late Saturday, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department. Leggett, a Tomahawk native, was 50.

By late Sunday, six people had been injured in opening weekend accidents, according to the state Department of Natural Resources, double the statewide total of last year’s first two days.

In Sheboygan County, a 52-year-old Cascade man was wounded in a leg while hunting in a tree stand. The DNR said a man was struck by a stray bullet Saturday while sitting at his kitchen table in Monroe County. He suffered bruises. Four other hunters accidentally shot and wounded themselves, including a 32-year-old Mukwonago man who shot himself in the palm of his left hand while loading a pistol in Grant County.
