Cardinals won’t resign Axford

The St. Louis Cardinals chose not to offer a 2014 contract to former Milwaukee Brewers

closer John Axford, making him a free agent.

Axford was a combined 7-7 with a 4.45 ERA with the Brewers and Cardinals last season. But Axford was 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA after the Cardinals acquired him in a late August trade.

Axford led the Brewers with 46 saves in 2011 but lost the closers role a year later.
