The state Department of Natural Resources says the number of deer registered during the recently ended nine-day gun hunt is smaller than originally thought.

The agency scaled back the total by almost thee-thousand deer. The DNR said Tuesday that preliminary registrations were at 204,725 deer. The revised total puts that season total at 201,812 deer.

The agency blamed the error on a new online registration system that was being used for the first time this year. A spokesman said the system worked well, but there were several inadvertent duplicate entries discovered.

The revised numbers still put the harvest ahead of the 2014 gun season total of 199,583 deer.
