Green Bay captures Horizon League men’s title

March 9, 2016 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Phoenix logo 2The Green Bay Phoenix earned their first Horizon League Tournament Championship in 20 years with a
78-69 win over Wright State in the Championship game of the 2016 Horizon League men’s basketball tournament on Tuesday night at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

Jordan Fouse led the Phoenix with 16 points on the way to being named the Tournament MVP.  Teammates Carrington Love and Charles Cooper joined Fouse on the All-Tournament team, along with Wright State’s JT Yoho and Valparaiso junior guard Alec Peters.

The Phoenix held the Raiders to 4-for-21 from the field to start the game and jumped out to a 24-11 lead near the midway point of the half.  The Phoenix were up 15 with eight minutes left in the half, but the Raiders battled back and pulled it to within six points after a 9-to-two run.  Green Bay responded and led 42-30 at the break.

Wright State’s offensive woes continued into the second half, as the Raiders were only able to tally eight points in the first ten minutes of action.

Green Bay hit enough free throws down the stretch to earn the Horizon League’s automatic bid into the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.

Green Bay will find out who they’re playing and where on Sunday evening during the NCAA selection show.
