Bad seed — Dane County farmers targeted by fraud

April 26, 2016 By Bob Hague

A former seed company employee is visiting farmers and representing himself as a salesman — but rather than ordering seed, he is cashing the checks for personal use. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office wants to alert farmers to the scam, after having received complaints from five farmers in western Dane County who did not receive seed that they paid for. The monetary losses range from $500 to $1,000.

Deputies have a person of interest in the case, but want to warn other farmers before more are victimized by the man, who is representing himself as a salesman from the Renk Seed Company. They’re asking any additional victims who have not reported being targets of the fraud to contact the sheriff’s office.
