Large snake spotted in Grant County

May 23, 2016 By Andrew Beckett

The Grant County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents near the Village of Dickeyville to be on the lookout for a large snake spotted in the area.

Sheriff Nate Dreckman said in a statement that the department received a report at about 5:30 Sunday evening from someone who saw the snake crossing Highway 61. It was described as “being as long as the width of both lanes of traffic” and was greyish/brown in color and believed to be a python.

The department is urging residents to keep an eye on small children and pets when they are outside.

Dreckman cautioned that a snake that size is not manageable to capture and can cause injuries. The department is advising anyone who comes across it to contact police and not to make any attempt to capture the animal. He said they do have a plan in place to capture the snake, if it is located.
