The state Department of Justice says last weekend’s statewide drug take-back effort collected a record total of unwanted prescription drugs.
Collection sites around Wisconsin brought in 62,618 pounds of prescription drugs during the weekend – a 40 percent increase over the previous record set last October. They were collected at 128 take-back events around the state on Saturday, which are part of ongoing efforts to keep those medications from being abused.
About 70 percent of those who abuse prescription painkillers started by using drugs taken from family members or friends.
The collected drugs have been loaded on to three semi-trailers and are being sent to Indianapolis, where they will be incinerated.
