The attorney for a 20-year-old West Allis man accused of killing an Illinois woman in an interstate shooting says his client has significant mental health issues. Zachary Hays made an initial appearance in Sauk County court, and his attorney John Helland was asked if Zachary Hays has shown remorse.
“Conversations between myself and Zachary are confidential,” Helland said. “It’s a tragic situation for all the families involved.”
Hays faces one count of first-degree intentional homicide and three counts of reckless endangerment in connection with the May 1 death of Tracy Czaczkowski. The victim and her family were returning with her family to Illinois from Wisconsin Dells. Hays also faces one count of first-degree reckless homicide in Milwaukee County. Investigators there believe he shot his neighbor, 42-year-old Gabriel Sanchez, the morning of the drive-by.
Helland said they are exploring all avenues for defense, including competency. “We address those when the time comes,” he said.
