Lawmakers set to consider funding Voter ID education campaign

June 13, 2016 By Andrew Beckett

The Joint Finance Committee will consider a request today to provide funding for a public education campaign about Wisconsin’s Voter ID law.

The Government Accountability Board is asking for $250,000 to run TV, radio, and other advertising about the requirement that voters show a government-issued photo ID at the polls. The plan has bipartisan support, although at least one Republican has questioned whether it will effectively reach everyone who needs the information.

GAB director Kevin Kennedy says there are pluses and minuses to any media campaign, especially when there’s limited funding available. Kennedy says he is glad to see most lawmakers voicing support for the plan, along with Governor Scott Walker.
