A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting on Madison’s near east side Thursday night.

Madison Police say they received a call from a resident around 9:00 p.m about a man acting strangely in Lake Monona. The residents then later reported seeing the same man throw a rock at a home. Police say the homeowners also called to report their home was being broken into.

Madison Police say the first responding officer planned to set-up a perimeter and wait for back-up. The suspect then allegedly exited the home with a pitchfork and advanced towards the officer. Chief Mike Koval says the man refused to drop the weapon multiple times and was shot by the officer. Other officers arriving at the scene administered first aid.

The man, who is white, was taken to the hospital and was later pronounced dead.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident. The Wisconsin Professional Police Association says it sent members of its field and legal staff to the scene.
