Neenah college student shot in Ohio

October 3, 2016 By WRN Contributor

An 18-year-old man from Neenah is in critical condition, after he was shot at an interstate rest area in central Ohio. Alexander Melchert is a freshman at the College of Wooster in Ohio. He graduated from Neenah high school last spring.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol believes it was a random shooting. Investigators say 25-year-old Shawn Johnson fired several shots at Melchert’s vehicle, around 11 a.m. Sunday, along I-71. Police chased Johnson, and they found him dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot, after he crashed into a guardrail on I-71.

An email from Wooster’s dean of students says Melchert was expected to have further surgery Monday morning, and his family is at a hospital with him.
